Today, many people look for natural ways to calm their minds, making ashwagandha for anxiety a highly searched and utilized remedy. However, rigorous science is needed to prove if these ancient plants actually work. This scientific paper investigates the safety and effectiveness of a standardized herbal extract on healthy adults experiencing mild stress. By tracking participants over two months and measuring both their psychological feelings and their internal blood chemistry, the researchers aimed to understand exactly how this plant interacts with the human body to provide tangible relief.

Why Do We Feel Overwhelmed and How Can Plants Help?

Stress is a common experience, defined by the researchers as “the nonspecific response of the body to any demand for change.” When life gets too heavy, our bodies react by triggering an internal alarm system known as the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis. This system releases hormones such as cortisol and Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEA-S) to help us cope. While this response is helpful in short bursts, staying in a high-stress state for a long time can lead to serious health problems, including hypertension, diabetes, and mood disorders like depression.


For thousands of years, the ancient Hindu system of medicine known as Ayurveda has used a small shrub called Withania somnifera, or Ashwagandha, to promote “youthful vigor” and enhance overall health. The plant contains special chemical compounds called withanolides, which are believed to help the body resist biological and mental strain. Previous studies have shown that this plant has anxiety-reducing (anxiolytic) effects, but many of those trials used very high doses or ran for very short periods. This scientific paper aimed to determine whether a lower dose of a highly concentrated extract could safely restore the HPA axis to a normal, healthy state and bring stress hormones back to normal levels.

Methodology

To obtain the most accurate results, the researchers conducted a 60-day randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. In the scientific community, this is the gold standard for testing because it prevents bias. They recruited 60 healthy adults (37 males and 23 females) aged 18 to 65 who reported feeling highly stressed.


These 60 participants were randomly split into two equal groups. One group received a placebo (a fake pill made of roasted rice powder). The other group received 240 mg of a standardized Ashwagandha extract known as Shoden. All participants took one capsule daily after dinner for 60 days.


To measure the physical and mental changes, the researchers used a mix of surveys and blood tests. They used the clinician-rated Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) and the self-reported Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) to track mood. Participants visited the clinic on Days 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60. On specific days, morning blood samples were drawn at 8:00 AM to measure cortisol, DHEA-S, and testosterone levels.

Main Findings

Significant Drops in Anxiety Symptoms

The psychological surveys revealed massive improvements for those taking the herbal supplement. Over the 60-day period, participants in the Ashwagandha group experienced a statistically significant 41% reduction in their HAM-A anxiety scores. In comparison, the placebo group only saw a 24% reduction. The self-reported DASS-21 scores also showed a strong positive trend, with a 30% reduction in depressive and anxious symptoms for the treatment group, compared to just a 10% reduction for the placebo group.

Lower Levels of Stress Hormones

Psychological relief was strongly backed by biological data. Fasting morning blood tests showed that the Ashwagandha group experienced a 23% reduction in cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. Meanwhile, the placebo group saw a tiny 0.5% increase. Additionally, DHEA-S, another hormone that spikes during high stress, dropped by 8% in the treated group but increased by 2.5% in the placebo group. This proves the herb directly impacted the body’s internal chemistry.

Potential Boosts in Men’s Testosterone

The researchers also tracked testosterone, a hormone that can influence mood and energy. In male participants taking the herbal extract, testosterone levels increased by 11.4%, compared to just a 0.1% increase in the placebo group. While the researchers noted that the sample size of men was too small to make this statistically significant between the two groups, they highlighted its potential importance. The study notes that men naturally lose about 110 ng/dL of testosterone every 10 years after age 30, suggesting this boost could have “health-related clinical benefits.”

Highly Safe With No Major Side Effects

Safety is always a primary concern in clinical trials. The scientific paper reports that the supplement was exceptionally well-tolerated. All 60 participants completed the two-month trial, and no significant adverse events were reported. Furthermore, detailed hematological tests assessing white blood cell counts, cholesterol, and triglycerides showed no adverse changes, indicating the extract was safe for daily use.

What Do These Results Mean for Daily Stress Management?

Living in a constant state of worry forces the body to overwork its internal alarm system. The results of this study clearly indicate that this specific herbal extract does more than just trick the brain into feeling calm; it actively changes the physical hormone response. The authors suggest that the herb’s anxiety-reducing effects “may occur via its moderating effect on the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis.”


By lowering both cortisol and DHEA-S, the plant essentially turns down the volume of the body’s panic response. This is incredibly important because overactive adrenal glands can lead to severe burnout. When the HPA axis is balanced, a person naturally feels more resilient and less reactive to daily pressures.


The researchers do note some limitations in their study. Because the group of 60 people was relatively small and only included healthy adults with mild tension, it is hard to say how the herb would affect someone with a diagnosed, severe anxiety disorder. They recommend future studies with larger groups, more diverse cultural populations, and longer timeframes to determine whether the positive changes hold over many months or years.
